YBD is a program which encourages the global youth to build their own enterprise aiming to solve social problems in their community or all over the world. As a Chinese youngster, I fully know that it’s growingly difficult for graduated students to find a decent job, thus an increasingly number of graduates hope to be self-employed. Besides, China, as a developing country with an astonishing speed of economy development, has a pyramid of social problems. Meanwhile, China, with its glorious culture, long history and 20% of people in the world, it’s a land full of hope and potential. Then comes the conclusion—YBD is a great opportunity for China, while China is also the right place for YBD.Suddenly, the idea of developing YBD in China flashed on me and it turned out to be a very significant decision, a benchmark in my life—I need to make a difference! Therefore, I try to contact with the YBD Committee in Oxford. Through some negotiations by e-mails, they agree to have a discussion among all members. Then, in May, I had a meeting in Beijing with Mr. Dan Marmar, the Oxford YBD Chairman (He then instates me as the President of YBD in China). His talk about social entrepreneurship inspires me. Later in the dorm, I think deeply about the current situation in China, the latent social problems, CSR, NGOs and we students. Then, I made my mind to take the paintbrush and draw the picture! At first, it’s tough— Oxford gives me a blank paper, and I need to picture it on my own. Step by step, I called on a team of excellent student who own the similar social value with me, searched for outstanding advisors who have much experience of building organizations and operating business, and touched the network in other leading universities.Although many frustrations have befallen on us, such us financial problem and misunderstanding of some other organizations, I’m still moving with my team. YBD aims to support the youth, and the youth who participate in YBD China will make contributions to communities and the society. Therefore, what YBD China changes, is not only a group of youth or a generation of people---the social values will spread and extend!A brief introduction of YBD ChinaHow does the competition runYBD, run by students of the Said Business School, is a social enterprise designed to deliver valuable life skills and business learning to young people, whilst encouraging the knowledge, understanding and development of social enterprises. The competition has been running successfully for three years. There are students from over 40 countries participating in YBD.1. ThemeThe theme of YBD has long been known as social entrepreneurship, which encourages young entrepreneurs to choose the fields which may bring about social value when starting their own business2. QualificationThe competition is held between teams, each of which consists of 3-5 members aged from 16 to 23. When applying, applicants are free to form their teams. English is the only language used throughout the competition.3. ProceduresThe competition includes three rounds of selection. In the first round, each team is required to complete an ‘Idea’ submission before April 30th 2008 supported by a local mentor (It can be a professor, an MBA, or a young entrepreneur, etc.). The University of Oxford Said Business School will then select some outstanding business plans to enter the second round. In the second round, the selected teams are supposed to complete their detailed 7-10 page plans during the summer vacation, supported by MBAs from the University of Oxford Said Business School (one or more instructors for each group).Eventually, through discussion, the judging panel invited by the YBD committee of the University of Oxford Said Business School will select the best business plans. As a reward, the teams selected will obtain corresponding investments to fulfill their plans. And all the other teams in the second round will have a chance to get access to the business ring provided by the YBD committee, thus gaining support from other outstanding social entrepreneurs.OrganizationAdvisor:Meng ZhaoSaid Business School, University of OxfordJun FangBusiness School, Renmin University of ChinaPresident:Zhuoyan ZhangRenmin University of ChinaVice PresidentShengkai LouRenmin University of ChinaPRRuoyun Yang, Hao Liu, Zhubi XuRenmin University of ChinaHRTianmeng Jiao, Jingjing FengRenmin University of ChinaYBD: Past, Present and ProspectThe mission1.
